community action is delivering improvements to the
Penny Lane neighbourhood.
Wonderful artwork from Susannah-Rachel Gorman presented on the bus shelter in the middle of the roundabout thanks to the Penny Lane Wombles for making this happen. To see more from Susannah click here

Penny Lane Wombles approached the owner who agreed to allow the group to use the windows of the property which could display artwork.

The idea being to use the five large French doors facing St Barnabus Church and Penny Lane as a focal point for illustrations of the famous Penny Lane song by The Beatles. Each French door would have a verse of the song illustrated on the windows with colours from the Sgt Peppers albums, along with painting the utilities boxes around the building.
A local artist Susannah was approached with the brief, and we are absolutely delighted with the work she has produced. It is funny, interesting, beautiful and easily recognisable. It has brought a disused building back to life and flooded the area with colour. We think Susannah more than hit the brief! The artwork will be available to buy from her website and in Bean coffee shop in the new year.
The transformation is also a stepping point to improving the overall area. We have great plans for various areas of Penny Lane moving down towards Smithdown Road, and some exciting ideas and implements in the pipeline …
But we need peoples help to fund this, we have a gofundme page

for some of the improvements as well as looking for wider investment.
The group coordinating these improvements have been meeting regularly and canvassing the local community and visitors to find out what changes people would like to see.
Plans include a large seating area at the top of Penny Lane by John Lennon, a seating/busking area at the side of the bus terminus, dropped kerbs for accessibility, local signage for points of interest, friendship benches at various points on Penny Lane and Smithdown Place, information boards and maps.
We have ideas to improve the green space, adding in picnic benches at the Millennium Green, a small wooden play area, working with Liverpool Schools Football Association to highlight the many famous footballers who played on Penny Lane pitches.
Penny Lane Wombles and Allerton in Bloom have so far made huge improvements to the area, along with the community garden on Penny Lane which looked fabulous this summer. Ensuring tidy streets, making beautiful planters and getting loads of local residents involved - improving many people wellbeing and creating a sense of community and being proud of our spaces.
We are excited to build on this to really give local residents a wonderfully improved area as well as allowing visitors to enjoy our lovely space.'
Lord Mayor and local Councillor Richard Kemp has brought together members of the local community working with LCC to kick start a regeneration of the Penny Lane area and create a Beatles Homeland destination to improve facilities for locals and visitors.
A number of ideas have been put forward, one of which from Penny Lane Wombles community group being transforming the eyesore of the old bus terminus at Penny Lane/Smithdown Place.
